I bet that is cheaper than my Mum or Dad had to fork out, when I used go every summer for 5 days nearly 30 years ago
We didn't do street dance or film making, but I can still remember it was my first taste of canoeing in a Grunman, crawling through the culvert tunnel under the road down to south camp, archery, climbing and abseiling on the what back then looked quite a big crag, hiking round High and Low Dam me hanging back pulling honey sandwiches out my pack and leaving a trail of them for the "bears".
A real good grounding and still vivid memories YMCA summer camp a great place.
A rag, tag and bobtailed bunch, but non the less brothers in arms, fighting the good fight.

May be I am mistaken, but I think YHA and YMCA camps are two different "ball games" - similar in activities probably, adventure and all that, but not certain that they are necessarily equal in terms of leaders. You might want to take advice from someone who knows a bit about both in recent years.

I know that YHA discounted courses last year, at last minute, to offload unsold full price places. A great saving for hard-pressed parents as well as offering opportunities for offspring.
There is in-house knowledge of both providers available, when you need it, Riggwelter.
Good schools, primaries, often take their Yr. 6 pupils on such activities too. Probably at a higher cost though.
Also many local leisure centres run courses for different activities, depending upon their locale. Windermere was used for kayak/canoeing by Kendal Leisure Centre last year, because my grand-daughter and her friend went on a week's course. Daily, not residential, though, so attendance may be difficult unless you live within easy reach of your chosen centre, and can drop-off and pick-up to suit.
When my children were young, there was little on offer besides Outward Bound, or private centres that you had to judge for yourself as to quality, safety and so forth. Now they all come with recognised guarantees, AALA for example.
Can recommend such experiences for youngsters, for independence if nothing more. At the rate your lad is going, he will probably have taken his Star tests and be well on the way by the time he is of age for these courses!

Thanks, Tilly, I didn't think to go back to Riggw. original post.
What's offered at Howtown might be just the job for Darren's lads - looks as if YHA are using what is now OB Centre there!

Bowser's lucky enough to have an active parent. That's the best start. Then when he gets better than Dad, you can send him on to the next stage, while you do your own thing. Even grandparents get a look-in if they stay in touch with the younger generation.
